Indianola Landmark

My wife and I were in Iowa last weekend visiting her sister. We escaped the snow and cold in Michigan and while in Iowa the temp hit 60 and I got outside to do some sketching.

This is a sketch of the grain elevator that serves as a landmark for my wife's home town of Indianola, Iowa. The elevator has been there for years and since it sits on top of a hill it can be seen from quite a distance. Anyhow, I was out looking for things to sketch and the elevator caught my eye.

Urban Sketchers Midwest at The Elms!

It was a chilly day, so we went upstairs to draw from the big sunny windows!

Work in progress...with the sun coming in the paints on my palette dried almost immediately!

Here's what I was looking at...I simplified madly...

Keith Cobb was able to join us after a long absence!

New member Cindy Winfrey drove over from the far side of the river--there are plenty of tables and comfy chairs to work from on cold days.

Christiana Farabbee sat back in the shade!

The room curves--here, you can see Christiana, Beth, and Carolyn Knutter, hard at work.

Youngest member Beth drew me, drawing!  Sorry you can't see it very well, it was terrific.

Christiana drew BOTH of us drawing!  WIP

Carolyn worked at the bar (which was closed when we were there!)

Don Gore posted his sketch the other day--this was one from his trip to Williamsburg, a whole other kind of early Urban Sketching!

The Elms

Drawing from this past Saturday at The Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs, MO.  Sat in a comfortable chair in the lobby and enjoyed drawing this wonderful fireplace.  This was my first ever attempt at using watercolor pencils.  Did my base drawing first with a fine point Sharpie in a large watercolor Moleskine and added the pencil / water over the top.  Interesting to use and I like some of the effects that resulted.  Fun afternoon with the sketchcrawl group.

Art In Bloom, St. Louis

Over thirty works of art including paintings by Monet and Picasso are reimagined by individual florists and garden clubs as floral arrangements in the Saint Louis Art Museum's Art In Bloom festival. The annual event resumes this weekend after a five year hiatus during the construction of the new East wing, Massive sprays of forsythia topped off multi-level flower boxes placed in the grand hall in the main building. This sketch was completed during the member preview on Friday morning prior to opening to the public.
