Amadeus Abroad

My wife and I are just returned from spending the month of July cruising on our boat Amadeus. This is her. She's a Catalina 355...pretty close to 36 feet long. The picture was taken in Manistee, Mi close to the end of the trip. As with outings on our previous boat, the watercolors were on board. We started this year traveling from our home port Whitehall, Mi. From there we headed north along the east shore of Lake Michigan, finally arriving in Frankfort, Mi.

Frankfort was the jump point for a run across Lake Michigan to Sturgeon Bay, Wi. About 10 miles offshore from Frankfort I did this sketch of day break and the dunes and clouds off our stern.  A freighter passed behind providing a nice accent to complete the piece.

The hop from Frankfort to Sturgeon Bay is 50 miles across Lake Michigan. Takes a while to cover the distance traveling at 7 knots.
I pretty much did a sketch or two everyplace we traveled. I'll be posting those too.

Sketchcrawl at the Nelson-Atkins Gallery, Saturday the 19th

Just a reminder and a bit of info for you KC area sketchers (and whoever else cares to join us!  I know one is coming from St. Louis and I think Springfield--exciting!)

We'll be meeting inside the garage entrance at noon or shortly after, and sketching wherever we want--I'm in an Asian kind of mood, myself!

FYI, the incredibly talented Molly Hammer is doing a brunch performance at Chas on the Plaza, in the Raphael Hotel, from 10:00 a.m. till one, and we're planning to go there on our way to the Nelson.  Join us, if you wish!

The Way, St. Louis

Composed of salvaged oil tanks, "The Way," a massive sculpture by artist and designer Alexander Liberman that stands 65' high, is the signature piece of  Laumier Sculpture Park in suburban St. Louis county. Liberman was the editorial design director for Vogue and Conde Nast publications for over 30 years while also being an internationally known sculptor. He died in 1999 at the age of 82. Although I have visited the park many times I have never sketched there until last week.
"The Way," St. Louis, 07/03/2014; Michael Anderson, water color on Canson 140 lb.
