Sixteen artists
were invited by Art Saint Louis and the St. Louis Symphony to sketch the orchestra in rehearsal on
Thursday morning. Artists were requested
to limit their media to small sketchbooks & ball point pens and to
minimize pen stroke & page turning noises so not to distract the orchestra
during their performance of a challenging program titled Heroic Strauss. I
compressed the stage proscenium perspective in order to make it fit within the
real estate of my sketchbook page. SLSO Rehearsal, 11/29/2012; Michael Anderson, Precise V7
Rolling Ball, Moleskine watercolor sketchbook, 5” x 16”.
Even with the limitations set upon you, it is still a fantastic piece, and well-detailed. Congratulations on the honor of being one of the participants.
ReplyDeleteThanks Aloquin. This was truly a rare & outstanding sketching opportunity.
DeleteWhat a great opportunity! I see the excitement of the music transferred into your sketch. I wonder if the musicians felt the excitement going the other way? I have a daughter who is a musician and she has spoken of how the energy coming from the audience makes a difference from one performance to the next. I'd love to see the other 15 artist's results alongside yours.
ReplyDeleteThank you Marcia for your great comment. One of the musicians did come into the audience & spoke with us during a break. He was very nice. Very cool observation by your daughter too!
DeleteWOW, what a wonderful image, and a wonderful opportunity, Michael! I often sketch musicians and find it SO energizing--did you feel that?
ReplyDeleteKate you are right. This experience was especially powerful. Thanks so much!
DeleteLove the sketch of the orchestra. Gives me the sense of the sound and the place. Neat opportunity for the artists who took part in the session.
