I'm not sure why, but recently I really wanted to go sketch some of the places that were meaningful to me as a kid. The old railway station is gone, but these two buildings are still there...one almost unchanged.

I took ceramics classes here when I was in third grade! LOVED it, too. The building is for sale, and while I sketched a young couple came to look at it. I hope it will be in use again! |

This is the only thing I have left from those days...I STILL like the interesting clay, with chunks in it... |

This was my uncle Ed's grocery store...they'd deliver, and whenever we ordered Ideal Dog Food, he would bring me one of these cute little metal advertising dogs you see in the lower right corner. (Yes, I DO still have one!) It's a small engine repair place, now, and has been for 20 years...much changed but still in use. |
Wonderful post Kate. Suddenly have the urge to travel to some of my childhood stomping grounds to sketch.
ReplyDeletethank you
Thanks, Tony! It was fun...I wish my old train station were still there, I lived next door to the stationmaster when I was little, and he taught me Morse code. I spent a lot of time down there!
ReplyDeleteHope you don't mind my saying, but this is one of my all time favorite posts of yours. And I've admired so many. So heartfelt -- paintings and words. The image of the ceramic piece sandwiched between the buildings made me gasp from the poignancy. So glad you answered the call to return to your roots.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind in the least, Marcia, it was an interesting experience for me. I'm not that crazy about much of the town I came from, but some places were full of such happy memories! Funny how much I still remember about that class.
DeleteWonderful and nostalgic. I loved reading about this experience.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marcia. Fabulous post. Is that a copper glaze on the ceramic pot? One of my first ceramic pieces is very similar in coloring.
ReplyDeleteI think it might be, Barbara...it's a glorious color of blue green. And thank you!
DeleteI loved reading about your experience and the sketches are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Teri!
DeleteGreat post. Love the sketches and your memories. I also went back to my childhood city recently. The sad thing was the neighborhood had changed so much that it wasn't safe to stop and sketch. At least the memories are forever.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't that great where I used to live, either...that's one reason I stayed in the car to sketch, and I was kinda glad Joseph was with me.
DeleteKate...really nice. Also really enjoyed the posts you put up of the art for your show.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dave! Fun to see that they were still there, and Don Gore told me last night that the railroad station has been MOVED, so now I need to go sketch it too...
